On the left front of the 23-year-old residence stands a snug room with fireplace, which opens to the foyer on one side and a broad kitchen on another.

An entire wall shows stacks of hardbacks, new editions and older volumes. Owners John and Diane Kidd O’Brien hold a soft spot for the cozy alcove, considered a study or library.

“This is probably the room that convinced us to buy the home. We’re book fanatics,” says Diane O’Brien, who with her husband bought the two-story 3,200 square foot home at 4862 Marshwood Drive close to 10 years ago. “We built a fire this morning,” she says, referencing a cold sunrise Monday that saw conditions warm up as the day went on.

The couple recently put their brick house, in The Plantation at Stono Ferry neighborhood in Hollywood, on the market for $639,000.

The O’Briens faithfully preserved the home, built in 1992. They installed a non-obtrusive retractable awning to protect the back deck from heat and rain, designed a finished room over the garage and landscaped the extra-large half acre yard. The residence, noted for its hardwood floors, also includes paintings from artist and friend Bill Jameson.

“We have done a lot of updates,” she says.

“Stono Ferry is one of the best kept secrets in West Ashley, maybe the Lowcountry,” says John L. Stewart, listing agent with Carolina One Real Estate.

“It is a beautiful, serene and quiet setting that offers many neighborhood activities such as the Charleston Cup (steeplechase) and golfing. It is just minutes to shopping, airport, major highways, beaches and downtown.” Recently, Stono Ferry opened “a beautiful new pavilion,” he says.

The downstairs heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit is new, and thermal windows and doors surround the large deck. Another perk is the two-car garage, which offers ample room for lawn implements and other equipment.

Stewart says the home includes new “Gerber comfort height” toilets, faucets in bathrooms, lighting fixtures throughout and two water heaters.

A hidden treat are the views. “You can see the Intracoastal Waterway from the guest room (upstairs),” Diane O’Brien says. It also stands out from the front deck.

The Links at Stono Ferry golf course can be seen through woods in back, and a small stream runs just behind the home’s rear fence.

“This is a very livable house, not intimidating,” she says.

The house stands toward the end of Marshwood Drive in Stono Ferry. Heading west, take Savannah Highway through West Ashley. Continue past the Main Road intersection. Three miles ahead, steer left at the traffic light onto S.C. Highway 162. Proceed about two miles, and Stono Ferry is on the left. Turn onto Stono Ferry Course, make a right on Forest Oaks Drive, then take an immediate right on Marshwood Drive. Ahead on the left is 4862 Marshwood Drive.
