In securing a place to live, tenants for the most part choose from one or two types of rentals.
They might decide to rent a unit in an apartment complex, which would have dozens or even hundreds of residents, amenities such as a swimming pool and professional oversight from a property management group.
Or renters could select to lease a single-family home, townhome or condo — most often located in a neighborhood and apt to possess a yard.
There are hybrids of these rental options, too. For example, people can rent a room or apartment within a home. This choice may give the tenant at least casual use of a larger house while preserving privacy and being able to come and go without restrictions.
That's the case with a rental within a two-story brick house in a gated neighborhood in the Dorchester Road corridor.
Owners are leasing out an 1,100-square-foot unfurnished apartment. The price is a moderate $750 a month and covers all utilities, including air conditioning. Required is the first and last month's rent and a $500 security deposit.
The apartment is spacious with lots of sunshine light from large windows, and storage, according to the homeowner who is handling the lease.
From the driveway, the rentable section can be accessed by way of a double French-door private entrance, she says. The entrance opens to the living room, complemented by a full bath, a work desk area and reading corner, the owner says.
Another feature of the apartment is a large bedroom with walk-in closet. Up a few steps from the bedroom is the kitchen, she says. The cooking area comes with a refrigerator, microwave and Jenn-Air four-burner stove.
Another perk is the top-notch views on a golf course fairway, sporting ature trees and the calm and quiet of the upscale community, she says.
Also benefiting the renter is use of the neighborhood amenities. They include a swimming pool, private dining and tennis courts. The community also has an 18-hole golf course.
The in-house apartment is not far from shopping centers, restaurants and offices in North Charleston and lower Dorchester County.
