Mediterranean Shipping Co. is expanding its Mount Pleasant office.

Gov. Nikki Haley’s office today said the Swiss-owned container line will invest more than $1.7 million and create 30 jobs by adding a data recovery center at 700 Watermark Blvd.

Also, the company has purchased an adjacent property for use as “MSC University,” a training center for employees and managers.

“We look forward to expanding our footprint in the Charleston area and building on our previous success,” said Sergio Fedelini, vice president of Mediterranean Shipping.

The East Cooper office near U.S. Interstate 526 and Bowman Road houses the company’s South Atlantic headquarters. It manages the shipping line’s port operations in Charleston, Savannah and Jacksonville, Fla.

Mediterranean Shipping has received a $100,000 grant from the state Coordinating Council for Economic Development as reimbursement for some expansion-related expenses.

The privately owned company was founded in 1970. It is one of the leading global shipping lines in the world and one of the biggest customers of the Port of Charleston.

The Geneva-based company already has more than 300 employees in the local area.
