A new energy-efficiency program aims to weatherize 80 Charleston area homes over the next two years.
The Sustainability Institute, South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. and Boeing Co. teamed up for the new weatherization project. The Home Energy Savings Program aims to help low-to-moderate-income and fixed-income customers.
The program will receive support from Seattle-based Social Venture Partners, which has a chapter in Charleston, and AmeriCorps as well. In addition to weatherization, it will provide recipients with personalized energy savings, improvement and education about their homes.
Weatherization includes air sealing, wrapping water heater and hot water pipes, energy-efficient bulb installation, smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector installation, attic and crawl space insulation and duct system repair or replacement.
Energy tips include setting thermostats at 68 degrees or lower in the winter and 78 degrees or higher in the summer; checking air filters monthly and changing them when necessary; keeping heating and air-conditioning vents and interior doors open to keep air flowing freely; setting water heater temperature at 120 degrees and checking it periodically for leaks; and unplugging appliances, lights, TVs and computers when not in use.

Hartnett Realty Co., a longtime downtown Charleston firm, has relocated to 1041 Johnnie Dodds Blvd., Suite 14C, in Mount Pleasant from the peninsula. Former congressman Thomas F. Hartnett, who will remain as chairman, recently passed the reins to his son, Tom Hartnett Jr., the third generation of family ownership.
The business was founded in 1947 by Catherine Forbes Hartnett.
The firm provides brokerage in commercial, land and residential sales and offers appraisal services in the commercial sector.
Cassina Group, a local Charleston real estate firm founded in 2006, has opened its third location. The new office at 132 East Bay St. adds to the company’s existing offices at 309 Coleman Blvd. in Mount Pleasant and 69 Morris St. in downtown Charleston.
Robertson Allen, company co-founder and broker-in-charge at the East Bay office, said the new office will offer better visibility on the peninsula.
Mount Pleasant-based Sabal Homes is celebrating 10 years of building homes in the Lowcountry by offering qualified homebuyers $10,000 toward the purchase of a new home in one of 10 communities where Sabal is currently building homes.
The promotion is good through July 12 for a Sabal home built in Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, Summerville, West Ashley and Moncks Corner. Homes run from $150,000 to the $500,000s.
Ashton Woods now boasts a new model home in Freeman’s Point, a waterfront community of 120 homes on James Island.
The Summerside model at 1028 Hills Plantation Drive features a first-floor master suite with a rustic barn door leading to the master bath. Upstairs includes a loft area with two more bedrooms, each with a walk-in closet.
Currently, the home builder has two homes available for immediate move-in in Freeman’s Point. Priced from the low $400s, the homes showcase the Broadwater home design with four bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms and the Chatham home design with three bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms.
The community features more than 1,000 linear feet of waterfront park as well as a neighborhood pool and pavilion, community boat ramp and dock, a playground and a walking trail.
