The new Aldi grocery store opening in Summerville this summer is looking for workers.
The low-price grocer’s representatives will host a hiring event 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. May 28 at Courtyard Marriott at 1510 Rose Drive in Summerville.
The 15,000-square-foot store, which will open at 10015 Dorchester Road on the site of a former bowling alley that was demolished earlier this year, is seeking 15 workers to fill store associate and shift manager positions. The store associates will earn $12.35 an hour and shift managers will earn $16.35 per hour.
Applicants must be 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, be available to work between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. each day, have some retail experience and be able to lift 45 pounds. Drug screening and a background check will be expected.
Workers averaging more than 25 hours a week are eligible for full health insurance benefits and dental coverage. Employees can also participate in a 401(k) program.
Aldi is an international supermarket chain started by Germany’s Albrecht family. Aldi Nord, its sister company, owns Trader Joe’s. The two companies are independent and have no operating relationship.
Aldi, which stands for Albrecht Discount, operates nearly 1,400 small-format stores in the United States as a wholly owned subsidiary of Hofer KG of Austria. The company announced late last year that it intended to add 650 locations across the country over the next five years.
Another store is planned for the Shoppes at Oakland in Mount Pleasant.
