MOUNT PLEASANT — NBC Sports Network will carry the Carrier Classic charity basketball event from the flight deck of the World War II-era aircraft carrier Yorktown on Nov. 9, organizers announced today.
The pre-Veterans Day doubleheader will feature the Ohio State women taking on last season’s national runner-up Notre Dame at 4 p.m. and the Ohio State men playing Marquette at 7 p.m. The men’s game will air live. The women’s matchup will be telecast at 11 p.m.
About 4,000 seats will be set up on the nearly 900-foot-long former warship, with most of the tickets given away to participating colleges, active-duty military members, veterans, the Wounded Warrior Project and sponsors, who have yet to be named. About 500 tickets are now on sale at about $500 apiece at carrierclassic.org. Ticket price covers both games.
In the event of inclement weather, the event will move to McAlister Field House at The Citadel. Officials plan to make that call by noon Nov. 8, according to Mike Whalen, co-director of Morale Entertainment, which is organizing the event.
Materials to be used for the game will begin arriving on the flight deck on the evening of Oct. 31. It’s expected to take a full week to set up the bleachers, flooring, goals and lighting, according to Eric Corriher, project manager with Production Design Associates of North Charleston.
