Jestine's Kitchen to reopen today

Jestine's Kitchen at Meeting and Wentworth streets closed Aug. 22.

Jestine's Kitchen will reopen for business today after an extended hiatus that came when restaurant owner Dana Berlin Strange unexpectedly shut its doors in August.

Reasons given for Jestine's closing have varied, but Strange said Monday that it was because of personal issues. Service will begin at 11 a.m.

The popular breakfast and lunch spot at 251 Meeting St. drew attention when a customer's review on Trip Advisor revealed that Strange had shut down service and closed the restaurant in the middle of a lunch shift on Aug. 22.

Strange said the timing of the closing wasn't ideal, but that she was facing a situation that required her immediate attention.

“Something personal happened and I just decided it was time to take a break,” Strange said. “It was a decision I made right then, and maybe it wasn't a good idea to close in the middle of lunch, but that's what I did. I'm ready to move on with my life, and Jestine's is too.”

Throughout September, outgoing voicemail messages at the restaurant have cited renovations as the reason for closing. However, aside from a new computer system and some staffing changes, not much is different, Strange said.

The restaurant's interior and menu will remain the same.

As for the staff, Strange said some employees have stayed on, while others were not asked to return. The new manager is Michael Pendleton.

“Everyone kept saying we were remodeling, but really I meant that we were remolding,” Strange said. “I needed a break, so I closed for month. I didn't think it would be such a big deal.”
