Jack's Cosmic Dogs opened its third location at 817 St. Andrews Blvd. one year ago this month, but apparently it's not doing so well and the owners want to change the format.
Property owner Mark Richardson recently applied for a special exception to allow alcohol sales on site and convert the name to Mex 1, Baja Cantina. Charleston County Board of Zoning Appeals approved the request this week.
Founder Jack Hurley said the 3,600-square-foot space is too large for the current concept. He expects the change to take place this fall after receiving the alcohol license.
Ocean Super China Buffet has taken over the space A1 China Super Buffet abruptly closed this year in St. Andrews Shopping Center in West Ashley.
The new sushi and traditional Chinese restaurant opened Sunday in the former 8,000-square-foot Woodcraft shop that closed in 2008. It is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
The breakfast crowd will add a new member when a restaurant that has been in the works for a while welcomes its first customers. Eggs Up Grill is set to open Monday at 2664 Highway 17 in Mount Pleasant, near Brickyard Planatation, said co-owner Jerry Romaine.
Chick-fil-A is now open at Calhoun and St. Philip streets in downtown Charleston. It's in Berry Hall and is part of College of Charleston Dining Services.
Ritz Camera will go out of business after 94 years after it failed in a bankruptcy auction to find a buyer to keep the largest U.S. specialty camera retail chain open. Its last local store is at 620 Coleman Blvd. in Mount Pleasant. A worker there said no date has been set for closure, but Ritz Camera plans to liquidate all assets at its remaining 137 stores.
The company emerged from bankruptcy three years ago with about 375 stores, but that number had dwindled when it filed for its latest bankruptcy in June as consumers shifted toward digital photography, photo-sharing and reduced reliance on in-store photo processing.
Pleasant Details recently moved from Mount Pleasant to 619 Marina Drive on Daniel Island. The auto shop sits in a new, 12,000-square-foot building and offers detailing, wraps, tinting, hydrographics and other services.
Look for the company at the Charleston Auto Expo at Blackbaud Stadium on Sept. 23.
Artist and Lowcountry native Clay Rice will be at Wonder Works toy shops in Mount Pleasant and West Ashley on Saturday. Rice will create his signature silhouette portraits. Call the stores in St. Andrews and Belle Hall shopping centers for an appointment.
