A German-based aircraft inspector said Wednesday it has set up a small operation for Boeing aircraft in North Charleston.

Lufthansa Technik AG of Hamburg, Germany, brings its third U.S. location to the Lowcountry. It already serves Boeing production plants in Everett and Renton, Wash., the hub of the Chicago-based aerospace company's aircraft-building operations.

"The inauguration of our third U.S. base for aircraft production inspection is completing our vision of omnipresence and seamless service for our customers," said Marcus Motschenbacher, director of network sales and customer service for Lufthansa Technik. "We are now offering production inspection at all Boeing sites and for all Boeing aircraft types currently in production. The Dreamliner is of significant importance for this business, as it sets a milestone in new aircraft technology and customer expectations."

For now, the company will have one person based permanently in North Charleston with another inspector sent from Everett, company spokesman Wolfgang Reinert said.

"Business is picking up strongly, with more than 10 aircraft to be serviced by the end of this year," Reinert said. "This will require more staff based in Charleston very soon. However, capacity peaks will always be covered by our Everett-based staff. This approach also ensures the information exchange of our inspectors based in those various locations."

The workers will be based out of Boeing's Delivery Center, Boeing SC spokeswoman Candy Eslinger said.
