Benefitfocus has completed the first leg of its massive expansion on Daniel Island.

The software corporation announced Tuesday it has opened the new 145,800-square-foot Customer Success Center, the largest building yet on its 40-acre campus. The building off Fairchild Street, which will be used for customer training and support, is part of Benefitfocus’ $60 million expansion that was announced in late 2013.

Another office building of about the same size will be built to house 600 software engineers, designers and other technical staffers. The company is also expanding its workforce by about 1,200 associates.

Chief executive officer Shawn Jenkins sent an email to employees this week, which was posted on his blog, to discuss the significance of the new office space.

“New and expanding buildings have a way of revealing to us what numbers on a report cannot. When we are able to walk through the physical extension of our hard work and growth, it has a deeper impact on us,” he said, adding that Benefitfocus’ first office was an 800-square-foot space shared by 18 people in Mount Pleasant’s API building.
