A Charleston-based merchant that got its start in a mall kiosk 16 years ago will open its 19th store in the Southeast this weekend. Three others are on the way over the next few months.

Palmetto Moon will welcome customers Friday and Saturday with special events and giveaways at the Outlet Shoppes of Atlanta in Woodstock, north of the state capital.

It's the fourth Georgia location for the Southern lifestyle-brand and collegiate gear retailer, and two others will soon open in the Peach State.

In the Atlanta suburbs, a new store at the Mall of Georgia in Buford will host its grand opening June 30-July 1 while the store in Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody is slated to debut Aug. 4-5 with its grand opening celebration. Another store will open in Celebration Pointe in Gainesville, Fla., Sept. 29-30. Merchandise at each store will be tailored to the local community.

Palmetto Moon operates four stores in the Charleston area: two in North Charleston and one each in Mount Pleasant and Summerville.

What's cooking?

Two new food and beverage shops are headed to Goose Creek.

Chicken chain Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is planning a new restaurant at 135 St. James Ave., at the site of a former skating rink. An opening timeframe has not been announced.

Meanwhile, Starbucks coffee shop is under construction just down the street near Central Avenue. It's expected to be completed by year's end.

Both establishments are firsts for the growing city in the Charleston suburbs.

Dad's day

Father's Day, which is Sunday, doesn't come close to Mother's Day in gift giving, spa treatment and other lavishings, but it's expected to post near-record spending this year.

The National Retail Federation projects Americans will lay out $15.3 billion this year, spending about $133 each. That's just under last year's record of $15.5 billion in the 15-year history of tracking sales.

Spending the most will be those between 25 and 34 years old, according to the survey.

Clothing will top the list, followed by gift cards, electronics, home improvement supplies, personal care products, greeting cards, tools and appliances, sporting goods, automotive accessories, books and music.

Mall incentive

Through Sunday, shoppers who spend $150 at Citadel Mall stores and restaurants can get a free $20 gift card.

To claim the cards, customers must take receipts to the management office on weekdays and Saturday during working hours. Receipts will be accepted through 5 p.m. June 20. Receipts will be returned to customers.

Also, Citadel Mall recently launched movie night for children and adults on Mondays at Center Court during summer months.

With the purchase of an adult meal, Chick-fil-A will provide a free child's meal to children. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. with a different movie each Monday.

In addition, the West Ashley retail center recently added a designated ride-share drop-off and pick-up location to the left of the Food Court entrance.
