COLUMBIA -- Carbures LLC will put its first American facility in Greenville County and create at least 50 jobs over the next five years.

Officials announced Wednesday that the maker of carbon fiber composite structures expects to invest $6.5 million on a new design and manufacturing facility. Construction on the 40,000-square-foot plant should begin soon with an opening date in spring 2012.

The Commerce Department said the plant is the first U.S. spinoff for the Spanish company. It will design, engineer and produce carbon fiber structures for the defense, automotive and aerospace industries.

The company is recruiting for management and engineering jobs now. It plans to announce other hiring plans this fall.
