CLEMSON – Clemson third baseman and cleanup hitter Richie Shaffer’s status for this weekend’s series against South Carolina remains in question due to a groin strain, Clemson coach Jack Leggett said Thursday.
If Shaffer is unable to play it marks a considerable setback for Clemson as Shaffer is the team’s top power presence, leading Clemson in most offensive categories last season and has already slugged two home runs and eight RBIs in six games this season. Shaffer suffered the injury on Sunday versus Maine.
If Shaffer is unable to play freshman Jay Baum will start at third base.
Clemson and South Carolina open their series at 6 p.m. Friday at Riley Park.
