FRANKFURT, Germany -- BMW AG said Monday the number of vehicles it sold rose by 14.2 percent in 2011 compared with 2010. The company sold a record 1.67 million vehicles under its BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce brands.

The BMW brand, the company's mainstay and a major customer of the Port of Charleston, sold 12.8 percent more cars and SUVs -- a total of 1.38 million. BMW's only North American manufacturing plant is near Spartanburg.
