A large, new retail store could be in the works for the Summerville area.

A developer has filed an environmental application for a new standalone 88,000-square-foot building with 401 parking spaces near Interstate 26 and U.S. Highway 17A. The retailer is not identified in the site plans.

Summerville Investment Partners LLC of Georgia is the name on the application to the Army Corps of Engineers and the state. A firm of the same name is registered in South Carolina, but it is not involved in the site’s proposed development.

The Georgia-registered firm is based out of Brentwood, Tenn.

Jenn Weyand, a spokesman for shopping center developer GBT Realty Corp. of Brentwood, said, “We are not at a point where we can announce what our plans are there. We have strict rules with retailers until a lease has been signed.”

She declined to say if the center will house a single retailer or multiple tenants, but said it will probably be this summer before any announcements are made.

The application calls for filling 2.4 acres of wetlands near Sawmill Branch on a site just outside the town limits of Summerville in Berkeley County.

The 21-acre tract is at the end of Jockey Court near Comfort Suites and close to the Wal-Mart.

Berkeley County spokesman Michael Mule said no plans have been filed for the site with the county, but it most likely will have to be annexed into the town of Summerville for water and sewer service. No plans have been filed with Summerville either, said Planning Director Madelyn Robinson.

A new Sears Outlet Store will open Thursday at 5101 Ashley Phosphate Road in North Charleston.

The outlet locations, generally about 18,000 square feet, provide marked-down pricing from brands that typically can be found only in full-service Sears stores, said store manager Chris Arnold.

Customers can look for one-of-a-kind, discontinued, reconditioned, overstocked and cosmetically blemished products, including home appliances, lawn and garden equipment, apparel, mattresses, sporting goods, tools and other items. The company said items still meet its quality standards. The shop will be open seven days a week.

The three-story building under construction beside Trader Joe’s in Mount Pleasant will house a drugstore, less than a block away from a Walgreens, also under construction. Tidewater Pharmacy and Medical Supply has leased 2,600 square feet at 431 Johnnie Dodds Blvd., according to the commercial real estate firm Belk Lucy.

Also, S&J Spirits has leased a 1,500-square-foot space at the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market-anchored shopping center at Bacons Bridge and Dorchester roads, according to Belk Lucy. Construction is expected to be completed by late spring. S&J will continue to operate its store at 4520 Ladson Road near Summerville. In addition, a 3,000-square-foot unnamed restaurant also will be part of the Wal-Mart development.

Scratch another RadioShack from the list of remaining stores in the Charleston area. A sign on the door of the store at 1200 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. in West Ashley directs customers to the nearest shop in Mount Pleasant. It closed before the ailing consumer electronics chain announced this week it is considering shuttering 1,784 U.S. locations, including two in North Charleston and about two dozen others in South Carolina.

The Colonial Candle shop that opened in a high-traffic corner inside Belmond Charleston Place in the fall of 2012 has closed. The store at Market and Meeting streets was part of Charleston-based MVP Group International, which specializes in candles and home-fragrance products.

Tanger Outlets will hold a job fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 18 inside Shopper Services. Several brand-name and upscale retailers, including Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th, New York & Company, Levis, Chico’s, BCBGMAXAZRIA and others, will be seeking full-time, part-time and seasonal workers.
