Belk to open pop-up shop in downtown Charleston ahead of Fashion Week

A regional retailer that once had a major presence in downtown Charleston will temporarily return ahead of Charleston Fashion Week.

Charlotte-based Belk, a major sponsor of the fashion event, will open a Crown & Ivy pop-up shop March 5 at 473 King St. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 11 a.m. It will be open until March 29.

The 1,320-square-foot shop will feature apparel, beachwear and accessories from the line the store launched in 2014.

“We are excited to bring Belk’s Crown & Ivy collection to one of Charleston’s most fashionable and highly-trafficked shopping areas,” said John Thomas, Belk’s executive vice president of private brands. “King Street is a perfect location to showcase the collection’s unique offering of vivid, fresh and chic separates to help the modern, Southern woman achieve effortless everyday style.”

Belk operated on King Street where Belmond Charleston Place hotel now stands from 1926 to 1972 before leaving for suburban malls. It had another pop-up store downtown three years ago.

The department store chain also will have a tent on Marion Square during Fashion Week, which runs March 15-19. The pop-up shop will be open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday until March 29, with extended hours during Fashion Week.

Belk operates four stores in the Charleston region in Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, Summerville and West Ashley.
