Former President George H.W. Bush hated broccoli, but most Americans don't agree with him.
Broccoli is the 5th or 6th most popular vegetable in the United States, said Mark Farnham, a research geneticist, for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Farnham is one only three U.S. experts on broccoli working in the public sector. He has been working at the USDA's Vegetable Laboratory on U.S. Highway 17 in West Ashley since 1991, studying broccoli and developing plants that will grow well along the east coast.
Ninety to 95 percent of the nation's broccoli is grown in California, Farnham said.
