Marilyn Bowers will leave her job as director of the Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration early next year, Board chairman Dan Martin said.
Martin said her decision was driven by the success of her Easley-based family business, which recently won a new contract and hired 21 new employees.
"I want to make this perfectly clear. Marilyn Bowers is retiring on her own free will. If I could, I would not have accepted her resignation," Martin said. "We didn't ask for it or want it. It was a shock to many of my board members. We wanted her to stay."
Bowers ran Pickens County's elections and voter registration office for 20 years before taking the Charleston County job in 2005. Martin said she will stay on the job here until January, ensuring that the upcoming Nov. 2 general election is properly wrapped up.
