Lowcountry leaders are getting a chance to learn how energy can be generated from offshore wind farms.

Nick Longfield is speaking in Charleston on Thursday. A leading expert in the field, Longfield has more than 35 years experience in alternative energy. He has been involved in Great Britain's offshore wind farms since they were first developed.

His talk in Charleston is sponsored in part by the Clemson University Restoration Institute and focuses on developing offshore farms.

Within two decades, the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that about 20 percent of the nation's energy will be generated by coastal or offshore winds.
