Workshop's outdoor patio has become a de facto playground/neighborhood club. Each Saturday, crowds gather for the popular farmers market, and families from nearby neighborhoods post up outside and let the kids run free. The only thing that's been missing is a bar with frozen drinks.
Enter Craig Nelson and Sam Gabrielli from Proof, the upscale King Street bar that prides itself on serious cocktailing. They'll be loosening up for the Pool Bar, promising fun cocktails and frozen drinks, served poolside, er, patio side, because of course there's not a pool at Workshop.
While Workshop's food stalls have plenty of noodle and rice bowls on offer, they mostly sell cans and bottles of beer, soft drinks and the like. EffinB Headquarters, a bar that took over the Bad Wolf Coffee shop, has great cocktails but doesn't open until later in the afternoon, so Workshop headmaster Michael Shemtov started looking for someone to partner with on liquor drinks and found Craig Nelson willing and able.
Nelson is excited at the prospect. Not only does it provide an opportunity for his star bartender Gabrielli to get in as a partner, but it also let's them get out into the sunshine and serve different styles of drinks from what they do at Proof.
The Proof Pool Bar opens Saturday, April 7 and will serve from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nelson expects if things go well, they will spread into Friday nights and Sundays too.
