Lana closes; Perig Goulet to open Poulette at same address

Lana served its last meal on New Year’s Eve, although staff members and customers didn’t know it until this morning.

“We wish we were in a position to give notice, but it didn’t work out that way,” says chef-owner John Ondo, who in 2004 opened Lana Restaurant at the corner of Cannon Street and Rutledge Avenue.

Perig Goulet has purchased the space; he’s been shopping for property since four years ago closing La Fourchette, his popular French bistro on King Street. According to Ondo, Goulet is planning to open Poulette within the next two months.

As for Ondo, he’s moving on to Kairo’s in Mt. Pleasant.

“I’ve been working on it for a good solid year, and it’s something totally different from Lana,” he says. “It’s quick Greek-Mediterranean.”

Because the restaurant won’t open until April, Ondo suspects most Lana employees will have found other work by the time he’s ready to hire.

Ondo decided to sell so he could concentrate more fully on Kairo’s. Plus, he says, “12 years is a good long run.”

“I’m having a hard time not breaking down,” he continues. “But I want to thank everyone who has ever worked for us or dined with us. They’ve turned into friends and family, and it’s been an honor and a pleasure.”
