Charleston -- A beloved Charleston bicycling advocate who died from injuries suffered in a bicycle wreck last month was not responsible for the collision, Charleston police said Friday.
Edwin Gardner of Charleston was struck by a Jeep Cherokee on July 21 while he was riding on Montagu Street near Lockwood Boulevard. He was rushed to Medical University Hospital, where he died a little more than 48 hours later.
The initial police incident report placed the blame for the collision on Gardner and said the driver of the Jeep would not be charged.
A review of the fatal collision was conducted by the police department's Fatal Collision Team. That investigation determined that Gardner "was not in fact a contributor to this collision," a police statement released Friday said.
Investigators determined the sole contributor to the accident was the driver of the Jeep, Charlotte White, the statement said. White will be charged with following too closely.
