Over three nights in August, 70 local bands are coming together to play at 11 venues around Summerville, Ladson, Charleston and Hanahan, all for one cause: the animals at Dorchester Paws. Proceeds from the music festival from August 17 through August 19 benefit Dorchester Paws, the only open-admission animal shelter in Dorchester County.
Rock the Rescue is the brainchild of Kally Knight, community outreach coordinator at Dorchester Paws.
“I’ve been involved in music and booking bands for years and years, and last year I started thinking about music events that could help our animals,” he said.
“I put together a festival with 40 bands in six different venues over two nights. With no promotion it raised $10,000.”
The 2018 Rock the Rescue “is blowing up,” he said. “It’s become the largest music festival in South Carolina within two years.”
Performance genres include rock, country, blues, hip-hop, DJ’s and punk ska. Acts include Saluda Shoals (who recently opened for Tracy Lawrence at the Hanahan Amphitheater), singer/songwriter Tyler Boone, ‘80’s tribute band Glamnation, the Mahon Brothers, Bootless and Deadontime (who won the “98 Rock Battle of the Bands” this year). All musicians are donating their time for the event, Knight said.
“It’s very humbling,” he said.
August 17 and 18, bands are performing at Tin Roof, The Alibi, The Pub on 61, Shooters of Summerville, Burns Alley, The Sparrow in Park Circle, The Summer Breeze, Purple Buffalo, Southern Shakers and HonkyTonk Saloon. Shows start at 8:00 p.m.
The last day of Rock the Rescue is at the Hanahan Amphitheatre. That day is kid and pet friendly, with jump castles and more than 50 vendors offering everything from food and vinyl records, to clothing and custom-made dog couches. Gates open at 1:00 p.m.
Tickets for Rock the Rescue are on sale now. VIP three-day passes – which include Rock the Rescue t-shirts and more – are $50; three-day passes for admission to every venue are $30; two-day passes are $25; and tickets at the door of each venue are $10.
