When it comes to floors, The Carpet Shop has you covered—and not just in carpet.

The second-generation business, conveniently located on North Main Street, offers any kind of flooring you might need, from hardwood and vinyl to ceramic and a wide array of carpeting. There’s even a Luxury Vinyl Plank —that’s waterproof and looks just like wood or tile.

The Carpet Shop is a family-run business with the personal touch that’s not often found in sprawling chain stores. Delbert and Brenda Phillips opened the first shop in 1972 at West 2nd South Street and Short Central.

“We were very small; we were just getting started,” Brenda said. “Today we’re no longer just carpet, we’re full service and offer all kinds of flooring.”

Forty-six years later, they have a large, loyal clientele that’s still growing. Son Drew, who graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in business, took over the day-to-day running of the shop about 12 years ago.

The business employs five installation crews who are experienced, skilled and trustworthy.

Hardwood is still the number one pick for contemporary flooring, Brenda said. “All hard surface flooring is popular, but most bedrooms get carpet still.”

Potential customers may not realize that The Carpet Shop offers financing, just like the big box stores. Installation is prompt and professional.

“We’re proud of our reputation,” Drew said.

“We have people who bought from us 20 years ago and call us to do another [installation],” Brenda added. “We have a good bit of repeat business and referrals, too. We have second-generation customers, and word of mouth is so important.”

In fact, a glance at online reviews illustrates The Carpet Shop’s reputation:

“My bathroom floor looks amazing! I will definitely call them again for my next flooring project!”

“This is the third time we’ve used the Carpet Shop. Drew and his crew have gone above and beyond expectations.”

“We LOVE our new hardwood floors and carpet! Not only did they have the best price, their expert installers did a terrific job.”
