Jacob D’Ambrosio was not going to lose.
That’s what Cane Bay High School wrestling coach Tim Wash wholeheartedly believed every time D’Ambrosio took his spot at the center of the mat during the 2017-18 season.
Forty-nine opponents tried and forty-nine failed to prove Wash wrong. D’Ambrosio, a senior, capped a perfect campaign by winning the Class AAAA state championship at 132 pounds in February.
D’Ambrosio was 3-0 at state and defeated Eastside’s Ben Maholtz 6-2 to earn a spot atop the podium, becoming the first Cobras grappler to win it all since 2015.
"He was going to win," Wash said. "He was going to do what he had to do to be a state champion. He was laser focused.”
Wash said D’Ambrosio never had a bad day at practice.
D’Ambrosio finished his career with 181 career wins, a school record, and landed a spot on the South all-star squad for the North-South All-Star Wrestling Classic after the season.
He is headed to Newberry College to wrestle at the next level.
