Fatal shooting in St. George

A St. George man died after apparently being shot to death late last month.

The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office announced that on Dec, 22, 2021, at about 4:30 p.m., deputies responded to the 500 block of Shady Grove Road in St. George for a call about shots heard. Deputies reported that while canvassing the area, law enforcement located a vehicle which had run into a ditch on the opposite side of the roadway.

Further investigation by the responding deputies resulted in them locating Edwin M. Boyd, 44, of St. George, inside the vehicle. Deputies said Boyd had been wounded by gunfire. He died of his injuries at the scene.

DCSO authorities said investigators have been working many leads in the incident.

Ladson man charged in child exploitation case

Dorchester County and state investigators have arrested a Ladson man who allegedly traded child pornography online.

It was announced that on Dec. 22, 2021, the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, with the assistance of the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office and the Low Country FBI Violent Crimes Task Force, executed a search warrant at 9093 Parlor Drive in Ladson for an internet crimes against children investigation. Law enforcement reported the AG's special investigators had received information that a subject at the residence was actively trading child pornography through the internet.

Authorities arrested Nicholas Komninos, 28. Komninos was charged with five counts of sexual exploitation of a minor second degree.

Komninos appeared before the Dorchester County Magistrate and received a $75,000 surety bond.

Assault and battery

A Dorchester County man was arrested after he allegedly attacked and choked a family member until she was unconscious.

Deputies from Dorchester County Sheriff's Office were called to a Mickler Drive home on Dec. 16, 2021, regarding a call for assistance, according to a DCSO press release. Responders said a victim met deputies away from the residence and reported that a 45-year-old family member had beaten her and choked her until she was unconscious. She identified the suspect as Jerry Lee Wood, 45.

Authorities reported Wood spoke with deputies through the door of the Mickler Drive home but would not come outside. Deputies obtained a warrant and immediately returned to the residence.

After again communicating with Wood through closed doors, it was determined Wood would not comply with deputies’ directives to exit the home, the sheriff’s office reported. Deputies then forced entrance to the home and took Wood into custody.

Law enforcement said the victim suffered significant injuries in addition to being choked into unconsciousness.

Wood was charged with assault and battery high and aggravated nature. His bond was set at $150,000.
