In the late 2000s, a local Corvette club looking to build on its widely-popular open show rolled out an all 'Vette display attracting classic Chevy sports cars from across the Southeast and beyond.
The first show gathered an instant following. Now, Vettes Doin Charleston marks its 11th year with a much-anticipated rally April 21 in a new locale, the Benefitfocus Success Center parking area on Daniel Island.
"We anticipate 150 Corvettes on display at the show," said Kim Sheldon, vice president of competition for organizer Coastal Carolina Corvette Club. She noted that Corvettes registered for the show come from Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Ohio, North Carolina and elsewhere in South Carolina as well as many local editions.
The new venue, she says, is "a beautiful site, and we are appreciative of the support from Benefitfocus to provide the area for our show." The business stands at 215 Benefitfocus Way on Daniel Island, at exit 24 off Interstate 526.
Specialties this year include a first-time Vendor Village area, "where we will have local items on display for sale" including car-related knickknacks and local craftsmen selling their goods, she said. Also representatives of the National Corvette Museum will attend the show and offer items for sale.
Proceeds from the 2018 Vettes Doin Charleston will benefit the Veterans Victory House in Walterboro and the national Corvette museum, located in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
"Last year, we donated $5,000 to the First Responders in North Charleston," she said.
Event-goers can check out the show at no charge but can contribute. "There is not a spectator entrance fee, however, we encourage folks to come out and take a look at the Corvettes and talk with all the Corvette enthusiasts," Sheldon said. "There will be availability to make donations for the charities at the show for anyone who is interested."
Sponsors include local dealerships Crews Chevrolet, Rick Hendrick Chevrolet and Mount Pleasant Chevy.
