Coroner's officials have identified the man who died Saturday morning at the Charleston County jail as 35-year-old North Charleston resident
Family members described Kelly as a brick mason and a father of three children.
The cause of his death remains under investigation.
About 5 a.m., Kelly was brought to the Cannon Detention Center by North Charleston police, the Charleston County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. He was booked on an unlawful possession of a firearm charge, the release said.
About two hours later, he was found unresponsive in the intake area, the release said. Resuscitation efforts were begun and he was taken by Charleston County EMS to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The S.C. Law Enforcement Division, the Charleston County Coroner’s Office, and the Sheriff's Office are investigating the death, sheriff's Maj. Jim Brady said in the release.
