BEREA — Greenville County authorities have released the name of a man shot and killed after a two-hour standoff in the parking lot of a state agency in Berea (buh-REE-uh).
Deputy coroner Barry Wright says 25-year-old Zachary Scott Whitfield of Greenville died at Greenville Memorial Hospital late Tuesday afternoon.
Officers say the shooting occurred in the parking lot of the Department of Motor Vehicles office in Berea after a burglary call in Powdersville and a chase that ended in Berea.
Deputies say Whitfield fired a gun at them after they had used a non-lethal device. Master Deputy Jennings Autrey says seven deputies returned fire. No officers were injured.
The deputies are on administrative duty while the State Law Enforcement Division investigates.
