WADMALAW — Authorities say a man set fire to several buildings on his property and then killed himself late Wednesday.
Joseph Edward Thomas, 65, of Wadmalaw Island died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Bobbi Jo O'Neal said Thursday.
Charleston County Sheriff's deputies found Thomas' body after they responded at 9:30 p.m. to a massive fire at 1909 Leadenwah Road, Maj. John Clark said.
When deputies arrived on scene they found four separate buildings engulfed in flames. The fires at the main house, a guest house, an apartment and an outbuilding all appeared to be intentionally set, Clark said.
Thomas' body was found in an upstairs apartment once the fires were under brought under control by St. Johns Fire, Charleston Fire and the St. Paul's Fire departments.
