SUMTER, S.C. — Authorities say they don’t plan criminal charges against a 10-year-old student who had a gun in a book bag at a Sumter County elementary school.
Police told The Sumter Item that they were called to Lemira Elementary School on Thursday by an assistant principal, who found the gun after another student reported the weapon to a teacher.
Authorities say the student never showed the gun to anyone, and there is no reason to think the student intended to harm anyone.
School officials sent a note home Friday about the gun and said the student will be disciplined through the school system.
