A 46-year-old Charleston man has been charged after allegedly carrying on a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl who was discovered to be pregnant during a hospital exam, according to court documents.

Samuel Bryant Jenkins Jr. of Greenhill Road is charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor. He is being held at the Charleston County jail.

On June 11, a physician at Medical University Hospital reported to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office that the victim was pregnant, according to an arrest affidavit. The same day, the victim allegedly told detectives in an interview that she had been having sex with Jenkins.

She met Jenkins sometime before last Christmas while he was doing maintenance work at the apartment complex she lives in on James Island, the affidavit states. She allegedly told him her age and he said it was OK because he “loves her.”

It wasn’t until the victim was out of school on Christmas break that they had sex for the first time, she told detectives. After that, they would frequently have sex, the affidavit states. The girl told detectives Jenkins was the only person she had sex with since December.
