10-, 11-year-old boys to be charged after starting Goose Creek playground fire, police say

Two boys were taken into custody after a suspicious fire at a Goose Creek playground Sunday afternoon.

A piece of playground equipment at Boulder Bluff Elementary School caught fire about 2 p.m.

Investigators determined that a 10-year-old and an 11-year-old set the fire, Goose Creek Police Lt. Keith Ott said Monday.

The 11-year-old boy was charged with third-degree arson, which will be handled by family court, and released to his parents. The 10-year-old was counseled and released to his parents and was not going to be charged due to his age, Ott initially said.

After consulting with the 9th Circuit Solicitor’s Office on Monday, and due to the severity of the damage caused by the fire, the 10-year-old also will be charged with third-degree arson, Ott said.

Investigators see no connection between Sunday’s fire and a fire last April at a playground on Fairfax Boulevard, Ott said.
