12-year-old boy who drowned near Johns Island identified

A 12-year-old boy who’s body was pulled from the water Sunday night near a Johns Island dock died of an accidental drowning, officials said.

Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten identified the boy as Adarius Jenkins, of Johns Island. A friend of the family said that family members were too distraught to comment further on the incident.

The youth was playing tag with two other children in the water near a dock at 3549 Joe Wright Road and was reported missing about 7:13 p.m, Charleston County Sheriff’s Maj. Jim Brady said.

Deputies, divers, air support and marine patrol responded.

Divers found the youth’s body in the water at 8:24 p.m. Emergency workers could not revive him.
