One woman died and four people, including three children, were injured Thursday after a sport utility vehicle struck a tractor on I-26 in Berkeley County, authorities said.
The wreck occurred at 9:17 a.m. in the westbound lanes near mile marker 189. The SUV struck the tractor, went off the right side of the road and crashed into several trees, authorities said.
The SUV driver, 23-year-old Kayla Hunt of St. George, was pronounced dead at the scene from head and body trauma, Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said.
The tractor had a bush hog on the back of it for cutting grass, according to the report. It was in the left lane of the highway when it was struck by Hunt’s SUV, Cpl. Bob Beres said. The SUV caught fire after going off the side of the road, he said.
Hunt was not wearing a seatbelt, Beres said. Three children under the age of 5 were taken to Medical University Hospital. All were properly buckled, Beres said.
The tractor driver, 21-year-old Alonzo-Jose Luis Montiel, also was taken to the hospital.
Traffic was delayed for hours after the crash. The patrol’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is investigating the crash.
