BLUFFTON, S.C. — A Hardeeville woman has been charged with driving under the influence after she woke up in a creek in her upside-down car.
The Bluffton Police Department says in a news release that the 32-year-old woman initially told investigators Saturday that she had been assaulted, but later, during questioning, said she had awoken in a puddle inside her car in Bluffton.
Authorities say the unidentified woman had slurred speech, glassy eyes and smelled of alcohol. Testing later showed she had a blood-alcohol level of .25, more than three times higher than the state’s threshold of 0.08.
Police later found her car overturned in a creek and determined that she had driven off a 22-foot ravine.
Authorities say the assault allegations were unfounded.
