Summer is officially over. Knowing what time of year is the best to buy certain items can save us hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars every year.

According to’s Best Time to Buy Guide, there are a few things we can get great deals on this month:

Air conditioners: Most old air conditioners go out during the summer when it is hot outside, which creates a high demand, and causes prices to go up. If you were able to wait until now, you can find deep discounts on last year’s models as stores clear out inventory.

Appliances: New models for large appliances are introduced during this time of year, so you may find big sales on previous models. Keep in mind that some stores stock older inventory during the holidays and then discount what isn’t sold at the beginning of the new year.

Jeans: Take advantage of preholiday shopping season clearance sales.

Seasonal produce: Look for fruits and vegetables in season such as pumpkins, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, broccoli, cauliflower, pears, oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, papayas and pomegranates. Visit for more information about what is available, how to freeze and how to cook different fruits and vegetables.

Cars: New model year vehicles usually are introduced at the end of summer. The end of a model year can be a great time to get bargains on a recommended model as dealerships make room for new models. You can negotiate for vehicles that have been on the lot a while because they are considered leftovers. Shop at the end of the month because many dealerships establish quotas for salespeople, who may go down on price to earn their bonuses.

Gas grills: Less demand means great sales. Companies slash prices on grills to make room for winter merchandise.

School supplies: Buy late when stores are burning off excess inventory. Stores are known to discount school supplies by 75 percent or more to make room for new products.

Toys: Retailers reduce prices this month on current stock to make room for the season’s hottest toys.

Wine: The best selection of wines will be available after fall harvest. Most vineyards release the latest vintages now. This is also a great time to find incredible deals on cult wines.
