West Ashley Middle School was dismissed early Friday after the power went out.

The school is on William Kennerty Drive, which is off Ashley River Road north of Sam Rittenberg Boulevard.

Parents were notified, and students started being dismissed around 11:30 a.m., district spokeswoman Erica Taylor said. A normal school day is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The outage initially affected less than 20 customers in the area but expanded to between 200 and 500 customers, according to SCE&G’s outage map. The utility estimated power would be restored by 1:30 p.m.

The map showed another outage of less than 20 West Ashley customers near Paul Cantrell Boulevard and Magwood Road.
