A Walterboro Army veteran was among four victims in a fatal rampage in a suburban Phoenix home Wednesday.

Jim Franklin Hiott, 24, of Walterboro had returned from a security detail in Kabul, Afghanistan last year. He moved to Arizona and was dating the daughter of the suspected gunman’s girlfriend, according to media reports.

Police said Jason Toddy Ready, 39, a former Marine who had ties to neo-Nazi and Minutemen groups, shot and killed his girlfriend, the woman’s daughter and granddaughter and Hiott, her daughter’s boyfriend, before taking his own life.

Known for his armed, civilian patrols along the Arizona-Mexican border, Ready has been described as a rising figure in Arizona politics and was running for sheriff of Pinal County.
