Waffle House shooting victim says shooter had asked him for a cigarette

The argument that turned into a deadly gunbattle at a Waffle House this weekend was started by one man asking another for a cigarette, according to a surviving victim’s statement to investigators.

The details were contained in an arrest warrant issued today charging an 18-year-old with attempted murder in connection with a shooting that took place about 4 a.m. Sunday morning in a Waffle House on Savannah Highway near Main Road.

Deonte Steven Brown of New Road Extension in Hollywood is accused of firing the shot that injured a 28-year-old Johns Island man. Brown turned himself in a the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office today. He was being held in the Cannon Detention Center pending a bond hearing.

Another man, 19-year-old Dontaye Reed of Ravenel, was fatally injured in the gunbattle. No arrests have been made in connection with Reed’s shooting.

According to an arrest warrant, the victim said a man came into the restaurant and asked him for a cigarette. When the victim refused, the man started cursing at him. Several other males circled around the victim, with one throwing a red cup in his face, the warrant says. The defendant threw a punch at the victim, then later pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired several shots at him.
