A detention officer has been fired for an alleged “use of force incident” involving an inmate, the Charleston County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.

The incident occurred Feb. 25, in the booking area at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center, Sheriff’s Office Maj. Jim Brady said.

Officer Jonathan Lewis was placed on administrative leave with pay after the incident, and was terminated on April 6 for violation of detention center policy, Brady said.

At the Sheriff's Office request, the State Law Enforcement Division is investigating to determine if criminal charges are warranted, he said.

The sheriff's office released a security camera video of the incident.
