Upstate deputy fired for using Taser on man in wheelchair

PICKENS, S.C. — Authorities say a Pickens County sheriff’s deputy has been fired for using a Taser on a man confined to a wheelchair as his son was being arrested.

Sheriff Rick Clark said an internal investigation of the Feb. 20 incident led to the firing of Deputy Steven A. Ticknor.

Deputies were trying to arrest 25-year-old Travis Antonio Mansell, who was wanted on a number of charges. Deputies used what Clark described a less-lethal Taser on him to subdue him and take him into custody.

The suspect’s father, 65-year-old Parker Mansell, maneuvered his wheelchair between the deputies and his son. Clark said a backup deputy used a Taser on Parker Mansell to prevent him from injuring his fellow deputies while they arrested the younger Mansell.
