10 unlocked cars rummaged through at West Ashley apartment complex

Unlocked vehicles at a West Ashley apartment complex were targeted Sunday, according to police.

Officers are investigating thefts from 10 unlocked vehicles at Castlewood Apartments at 2145 Royal Castle Lane. There were no signs of forced entry into any of the vehicles, according to a Tuesday media release.

Charleston police responded to the apartment complex about 8:30 a.m. Sunday after one of the victims found the passenger side door to his vehicle open and rummaged through, the release states. He also noticed several other vehicles that looked like they had been rummaged through.

Items taken from the vehicles include money, electronics and a wallet. Spokesman Charles Francis encouraged residents to always lock their vehicles and to never leave items of value in sight.

Anyone with information about the thefts is asked call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111 or Consolidated Dispatch at 743-7200 and ask for the on-call Charleston police detective.
