U.S. 17A east of Walterboro open again after fatal wreck

Tractor trailer and pickup truck wrecked on 17A in the Round O area.

A fatal wreck east of Walterboro in Colleton County closed down U.S. 17A for more than six hours Friday.

The wreck between a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck was reported around 5:40 a.m. on 17A at Merrick Drive in the Round O area. The driver of the 2007 Ford F-150 was killed, and the Freightliner driver was transported to Colleton Regional Medical Center, Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Beres said.

The F-150 was traveling north on 17A when it ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected, came back across the road and hit the tractor-trailer head on, Beres said.

The pickup driver was not wearing a seat belt, and troopers had not determined if the Freightliner driver was wearing one, Beres said.

The highway reopened to traffic around noon.
