Two current Moncks Corner town council members will face off to become the town’s next mayor.

The special election will be held March 31.

Interim Mayor Michael Lockliear and Councilwoman Tonia Aiken-Taylor filed for the seat left open when Bill Peagler resigned on Dec. 31, the day before he was sworn in as Berkeley County supervisor. Peagler was elected supervisor after a Republican primary run-off in June. He had no Democrat opposition in the November election.

The term runs through December.

Because the election will leave a vacancy on the council, another special election will be held to fill that seat. If the winner steps down effective April 2, filing would be April 17 to April 27 and the election will be held on June 30.
