Police probing an early Saturday shooting in which one man was killed and another wounded said they believe the gunfire erupted during an unsuccessful drug deal.

Two arrests have been made in relation to the homicide case, but investigators still do not know who fired the shots, or why, North Charleston police spokesman Spencer Pryor said Monday.

Police responding minutes after midnight to reports of gunfire found Andre Manigault, 23, of North Charleston dead in the road near Purcell Drive and Old Ridge Road, Pryor said.

According to police, witnesses reported that a gold Ford Crown Victoria was seen speeding from the area after the shooting. Police later stopped a car matching that description near Ashley Phosphate Road, and the driver, John A. Bradley II of Eberly Avenue in North Charleston, was charged with second-offense driving under suspension, driving without headlights, and conspiracy to violate South Carolina narcotics laws, Pryor said.

Fresh blood smears were found on the front driver’s seat and the front passenger seat, a police report states.

Pryor said another man, Devon Wilson, 19, of Bailey Drive in North Charleston was found shot in the leg in the Valleyview Lane area. He was taken to Medical University Hospital for treatment. Wilson is charged with conspiracy to violate South Carolina narcotics laws, Pryor said.

Pryor said investigators believe Manigault and Wilson arrived at 4640 Purcell Drive to conduct a drug transaction with Bradley and another man, when the deal went bad and shots were fired.
