A brush fire along Interstate 26 near U.S. 78 and Charleston Southern University has been cleared.

The fire generated smoke on the highway, slowing eastbound traffic earlier this afternoon. An exit ramp in the area was closed so firefighters could put out the flames.

The blaze was reported about 3:10 p.m., according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

It was cleared by about 5:30 p.m, according to the North Charleston Fire Department, which had three trucks there.
