Three people injured in Hanahan apartment shooting

Three people were shot Sunday night at a Hanahan apartment and two fled the area but were found a short time later, according to police.

Officers responded just before 10 p.m. to Colony Square Apartments at 1100 River Road and met with Kiara Howard, 24, who was shot in the chest, according to a police report.

She was taken to Medical University Hospital. Arthur Lee Green, 28, of Torgerson Avenue in North Charleston was also shot and located at a different apartment complex on Murray Drive, according to a police report. A third shooting victim, 31-year-old Deon Jermaine Hampton of Breland Street in Walterboro, was found at the Sunoco gas station at 5710 Rivers Ave.

Capt. Michael Fowler said the incident appears to be a home invasion.

Howard’s husband, Joseph Howard, told police that one of the two men asked him for a cigarette and when he turned around he pushed a gun into his back and forced him into the apartment. Once inside, a struggle ensued and someone fired the pistol.

Kiara Howard returned fire with her own weapon, shooting both Green and Hampton, and then was shot by one of them, the incident report states.

Hampton was driven to the Sunoco by Round O man Jacob Campbell, 23, who was arrested by North Charleston police on warrants out of Colleton County, according to a separate police report.

During Hanahan officers’ investigation, Joseph Howard was arrested and charged with unlawful conduct toward a child, simple possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and a weapons law violation.

Fowler said two young children were found in the Howards’ residence.

Police also found two weapons in the Howards’ apartment: a Hi-Point .40-caliber pistol on the floor near a doorway and .380-caliber Jiminez pistol by the television in the living room.

The investigation is ongoing and more charges are pending, Fowler said.
