What: Today marks the 150th anniversary of the capture of Charleston by Union forces. During the height of the American Civil War, Charleston was blockaded by Union land and sea forces. The blockade began in June of 1863, and despite the Union’s persistent efforts, it was not until February 18th 1865 that Sherman’s movements in South Carolina led to the city’s evacuation and subsequent capture. Several professors will discuss this important event in the history of Charleston and the Civil War.
