FILE PHOTO/PROVIDED George Mason will be one of the eight teams playing in the Gildan Charleston Classic, ESPN’s preseason basketball tournament, beginning today at noon at the College of Charleston’s TD Arena. Doc Nix (right) will lead the university’s nationally acclaimed pep band this week.

What: In support of the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, items such as deodorant and body wash (unused full-size bottles for men or women), reading glasses (any strength) and ground coffee (any size bag or can) will be collected for donation to the center throughout November.

What: This Drayton Hall Distinguished Speakers Series event will examine the archaeological discovery of three of Colonial Virginia’s most lavish 17th- and 18th-century structures: over-the-top, eye-popping, plantation houses, similar to the colonial stature of Drayton Hall. However, none of the wealthy builders resided in these grandiose mansions. Dr. Carson, formerly of Colonial Williamsburg, will discuss speculations as to the reasoning behind this and other mysteries.

What: The Pearlstine/Lipov Center for Southern Jewish Culture and the National Trust for Historic Preservation will present the Charleston premiere of “Rosenwald,” the documentary of Julius Rosenwald, who never finished high school, but rose to become the president of Sears. Rosenwald also was a Jewish philanthropist who joined forces with African American communities during the Jim Crow South to build over 5,300 schools during the early part of the 20th century.
